Where to Get Started on Developing iPhone Apps

The advent of the iphone app store has fostered a movement and an outlet for developers to jump on the Apple bandwagon and make some real money. Spending long days on design, programming, web hosting, and all sorts of topics can be very exhausting and developers are turning to an escape from their normal day to day tasks. Applications are springing up everywhere, are written about every topic, and have an audience of thousands and rising. How can developers join this momentum and create applications that will sell? There are a few things to look at before you begin, as well as some great applications and programs already available.
Choosing a subject for your application is the first crucial step. It does not have to be the most creative and original idea, it just has to cater to a market that is looking for a solution to their problem. Look around at the everyday things you work on and what others use and think about on a daily basis. The app should provide some functionality, save the user time and resources, and provide some type of enjoyable experience. Start opening your eyes and ears and observing people and you will find something that will make someone’s life a little easier or happier. Just remember, virtually anything can become an iphone application.
For the serious developers, Apple offers a program which gives you the tools and instruction to develop your own applications and sell them in the Apple store. Development tools such as Xcode and the iphone simulator are included as well as videos and documents detailing best practices and guidelines to help you get started. In addition, there is a forum platform where you can ask questions and get needed feedback concerning the process and the program. When you have finished your project, free web hosting is available, as well as the ability to sell it in their store for a small percentage of the profits.
If you need to do some work on the go, iphone applications and tutorials are currently available specifically for developers to make their job easier. The first is “Developer Notes”, built exclusively for the web development and software audience. You can assign specific tasks, organize notes and due dates, and email you or others, all in one interface. “Source viewer” is another handy application which enables you to view the HTML source code of a website in an easy to read format. Lastly, tutorials can be found on the web. They are specifically designed to help developers who are branching into the iphone application arena. Search for online databases of free iphone SDK tutorials. These sessions will supply a foundation for development and give you the tools necessary for building applications utilizing different coding platforms.
After the typical, boring discussions on design, web hosting, and test servers, developers need an outlet to get creative and generate some revenue. Creating iphone applications can be very rewarding and worthwhile, and it is easy to get started on the journey. As you can see, there are many resources available for the beginner and advanced developer, allowing for a smooth learning curve and a painless experience.

Renewed RateMe App
An interesting one - "My photos" section is added. Now you can send as many photos as you want and come back later to review the results and comments. Also you can start and stop your photos at will.
The second is that now users have possibility to slide on photos (in addition to the next button) and a hidden function that allows them to skip a photo that they do not wish to vote on. Vote on one and they can skip the next one! Nevertheless, a warning to big voters, the photo that they have not voted on will probably come back eventually ;)
There was a lot of discussion around whether the app should stay free or not. Mobya decided to leave it free by adding advertisements within the comments. If the company has enough feedback of user asking for an ad-free version, they may do premium version without ads.
Features, in details:
• Take a photo using the app or choose one from your album;
• Change gender preferences in settings--choose to rate only men, only women or both!;
• Each comment shows what country the user is from;
• Press "stop" to take your photo off the voting pool;
• See average ratings for each photo;
• Fairness meter shows how fair you are being in comparison to other users
Here are some interesting figures: since the launch a few weeks ago, we can now count almost 300,000 votes for 10,000 photos uploaded. It looks very promising.
JoinMe is already available in App Store as it said it is free.
Mobya is a French company created in 2009. Mobya develops innovative and practical mobile apps for next generation phones. In addition, company developed other app like InstantPay and JoinMe.

iPhone Comes to China Without Key Feature
Unicom's first iPhones lack WiFi, a possible handicap with sophisticated, demanding Chinese buyers. The technology, a key part of the iPhone's appeal, allows the phones in other markets to use free wireless networks in cafes and offices to download e-mail and the latest applications. Apple Inc. and Unicom also could face competition from an unusual source: unlocked iPhones brought in from abroad that have WiFi.
There are already an estimated 1.5 million to 2 million such phones using China Mobile 3G service that allows Internet access and other features. Unicom's prices range from 4,999 yuan ($730) to 6,999 yuan ($1,025) for the high-end, 32-gigabyte iPhone 3GS. That is 20 percent above the 5,700 yuan ($835) charged by merchants at Chinese street markets for a 3GS with WiFi.
The iPhone's awkward, delayed entry into China reflects the regulatory and technical hurdles of a fast-changing market where other global technology companies have struggled to establish themselves. Unicom's iPhones lack WiFi because it was temporarily banned by Beijing, which was promoting a rival Chinese system, according to BDA. The ban was relaxed in May after manufacturing had begun.
China has more than 650 million mobile phone accounts, despite an average annual income of $3,000 per person. Some users trade in phones several times a year to get the latest features. China Unicom has 143 million mobile accounts, which would be an impressive figure in any other market but lags far behind China's Mobile's 508 million accounts. Unicom, China Mobile and the third company, China Telecom Ltd., all emerged with mobile and fixed-line services. The lack of WiFi means Unicom iPhone customers will have to pay to connect to the phone network for every function. BDA's Clark said that could alienate users if it leads to high monthly bills.

Gmail Helps iPhone Users to Create Long e-mails Easier
Google released new feature for long-winded iPhone e-mail authors that makes typing lengthy Gmail messages easier on the iPhone and iPod Touch.Verbose e-mailers will see blank lines appear below the cursor as you reach the bottom of the window. It is not yet clear, if there’s a limit to how many lines you can add in a Gmail message. To review your message just swipe up and down to scroll.
At this point, Gmail’s composition window won’t contract when you delete lines; expansion alone is the name of the game.
The expanding Gmail composition box is part of Google's iterative Web project for slowly introducing new features to Gmail mobile one at a time. The composition feature is available to iPhone and iPod users who reach Gmail via Gmail.com from the Safari browser.
Google's Gmail-for-mobile project began in April 2009.

“iPhone your life’ site”
A new section on Apple’s website - “iPhone Your Life,” as it’s called, allows you to see applications as they relate to different parts of your life, and what app they would recommend to make the phase of your life easier in some way.

They have staff picks, top downloaded apps, and descriptions of featured applications. It’s an interesting philosophical approach to the everyday use of the smartphone, and the apps recommended are generally the best of the lot.

Citrix developing XenApps and XenDesktop for the iPhone
By the first half of 2009, Citrix will make its XenDesktop and XenApp client and server software for remote access to Windows applications available for the iPhone. “We expect to have it sooner rather than later,” said Chris Fleck, vice president of Solutions Development at Citrix .The company is addressing an “unbelievable market demand” for such a product. Requests have become the number-one topic of discussion on its blog site. Citrix XenApp virtualizes an individual application, be it Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, or SAP, allowing users to run those applications on a client directly from a XenApp server hosted with a Windows application like SAP. XenDesktop provides access to a centrally hosted desktop, in particular a user’s desktop on a remote server.
Similar Citrix technology is available for Windows Mobile devices and devices running the Symbian operating system. However, in the case of the iPhone, Citrix has tweaked the XenApp and XenDesktop technology so that it can leverage the unique features and capabilities of iPhone, such as touch gestures, pinch and pull, zoom, and pan. It will make available the entire world of a half-million Windows applications. Citrix developers worked with Apple to design the iPhone version of the Xen App and Desktop in order to preserve as much of iPhone’s unique capabilities as possible. For example, although an enterprise application remains unchanged, users accessing that application on the iPhone will be able to use iPhone’s Accelerometer technology to change screen view from portrait to landscape to help provide visibility, usability, and navigability.
