What’s New In iOS 5.1

So much awaited iOS 5 update has finally been rolled, announced on an iPad event on March 7th , San Francisco. Due to the fact that there has been no single mention of the update since January 9th (the last beta release date), the expectations about iOS 5.1 have gone wild. Unfortunately there are no surprises in iOS 5.1  as it was anticipated, but the update brings several major improvements along with some minor changes in audio and call quality.

One of the most vivid changes concerns the way you access the camera app: if you had to double tap your device and then again press the home button to access camera in previous iOS versions, now the camera icon is always present on the lock screen when the phone is on, and is activated by just sliding the icon up.

The next change concerns the camera app too, but this time for iPad: it is redesigned the way that performs faster, smoother and has some minor basic functions added. One more thing that’s new is that you now finally have an option to delete photos from your photo stream! And the last and the most expected: Japanese Siri is also present and will be available by March 16th.

The update also brings major battery improvements for the sake of iPhone 4S owners, fixing all the previous issues that the users complained so much about.

Despite battery fixes, there is one  more important thing iPhone 4S users should know: iOS 5.1 turns iPhone 4S into a 4G iPhone on AT&T's network, but unfortunately without any increasee in speed.

The latest iOS firmware update is already available for each and every iDevice, but if you have jailbroken your device, avoid upgrading to iOS 5.1 because you may lose your jailbreak.

Apple’s March 7 Event Complete Coverage: New iPad, Apple TV and iOS 5 Updates

Several hours ago Apple dropped a huge press conference in San Francisco for making three major announcements: the launch of so much rumored and awaited iPad, highly expected Apple TV and some major updates with the current iOS.

New Apple TV features 1080p programming comprising iTunes movies and TV shows, Netflix, Vimeo, photos and more, and all in HD! With iTunes in the Cloud, users can get hands on their favorite movies and TV shows right from the iTunes Store instantly, enjoying them in HD. Despite the huge speed and simplicity, the new Apple TV features humbler, advanced user interface making it easier than ever to access your purchased movies, TV shows and music with iTunes Match right from iCloud. Streaming or mirroring your favorite content from the rest of iDevices including iPad or iPhone is also available. On the other hand, you can buy movies and TV shows on Apple TV and watch them on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC too, with incredibly high speed, no matter which device you choose to use.

Apple TV will be available on March 16th for a suggested retail price of $99 (US) through the Apple online store, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers and requires iTunes 10.5 or later, 802.11g/n Wi-Fi network or Ethernet network, a broadband Internet connection and a HD TV capable of 1080p or 720p and an HDMI cable that is sold separately.

Now let’s move on to iLife apps for iOS. To complete this bundle, Apple introduced iPhoto for iPad and iPhone and major updates to iMovie and GarageBand. The following improvements were made:

iPhoto now features revolutionary Multi-Touch abilities so you can use simple gestures to sort through hundreds of photos and find your best shots, augment and retouch your images using fingertip brushes and share spectacular photo journals with iCloud. To list the whole new improvements would take us far away, so to cut the long story short, so just imagine Photoshop mating with Instagram- to fully analyze the new capabilities.

With the advanced iMovie you now are able to create amazing Hollywood-style trailers as you record HD video on your iPad and iPhone, even as you’re recording. The new Theater view lets you screen and pick from nine patterns in a range of categories including Superhero, Romance and Fairy Tale. Trailers feature soundtracks written by legendary composers such as Academy Award-winner Hans Zimmer and performed by world class musicians like the London Symphony Orchestra.

GarageBand introduces Jam Session, a groundbreaking and really cool feature that allows you to invite up to three friends of yours to wirelessly tie the iOS devices together for playing instruments and record live music. Jam Session spontaneously orchestrates the tempo, key and chords of your Touch Instruments so one and all sound great.

And the last and the most important- the new iPad! The third generation device of its category defining mobile device, featuring a fabulous new Retina display, Apple’s new A5X chip with quad-core graphics and a 5 megapixel iSight camera with progressive optics for capturing amazing photos and 1080p HD video. iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G connects to fast networks worldwide, including AT&T’s and Verizon’s 4G LTE networks, and still delivers the same all-day 10 hour battery life- just like the iPad 2, while remaining amazingly thin and light. Beginning today, iPad 2 will be offered at an even more affordable price starting at just $399!

As for the further details about iPad 3, read through:

Retina display: delivering four times the number of pixels of iPad 2, so compact that the human eye is incapable to differentiate individual pixels when held at an ordinary distance, making web pages, text, images and video look extremely sharp and lifelike. The 3.1 million pixels in the Retina display are more than one million more pixels than an HD TV, and with 44% increased color saturation the new iPad displays colors that are astonishingly richer, deeper and more vivid.

A5X chip – this powerful chip with quad-core graphics was specially designed by Apple to deliver a fast, receptive user experience while supporting the incredible Retina display. With double the visuals performance of the A5 chip, the A5X delivers a superb equilibrium between performance and power efficiency so you can enjoy all the benefits of the stunning new display while experiencing a smooth Multi-Touch interface, intensive gameplay, unbelievable visual depth and all-day battery life that iPad is known for providing.

iSight 5 MP camera features progressive optics for taking fabulous pictures and recording full HD video. Backside illumination is available, allowing you to shoot great photos in low-light environments and a new video image maintenance feature eliminates the bumps and shakes naturally seen when filming with a hand-held device.

Despite the features above, iPad Wi-Fi + 4G with built-in next gen 4G LTE has the most all-inclusive support for fast networks internationally including HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA, and now both CDMA and GSM iPad users have the ability to easily roam internationally.

So much rumored Japanese Siri was also introduced, together with iOS 5.1 and iTunes 10.6 free software updates!

Pre-Orders for iPad are now available. Despite the US, iPad will also be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands on Friday, March 16 for a suggested retail price of of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model and $699 (US) for the 64GB model.

The new device is available in black and white colors and wills hit Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden by the end of March!

Your Unlimited Data Plan Will Be Throttled By AT&T – It Is Official

On Thursday AT&T will put limits on their Unlimited Data plan that slows speeds for 3G and 4G customers who exceed 3GB in a billing cycle and caps 4G LTE customers at 5GB. The carrier has explained the move on a support page, as it said: “you will still be able to use as much data as you want. That won’t change.”

Before that, AT&T had only slowed the speeds of customers who were in the top 5% of their respective markets, a practice known as throttling. Despite the fact, AT&T insists that 95% of smartphone users will not be throttled. As an AT&T rep says the cause of the change is that “customers had told us that more clarity would be helpful.”

People, who are affected, will receive a text message which explains that their usage is near 3GB (5GB for LTE users). Exceeding that threshold will lead in reduced data speeds, although you will still have the opportunity to email and surf the web. AT&T does not disclose how fast speeds will run for users who have been throttled.

As the carrier was citing the strain on its network wrought by data-hungry iPhones, it has begun throttling data for its top 5% of users last months. The practice was followed by Verizon then. As expected, the move has made riled many AT&T customers, citing the plan’s claim to “unlimited data.”

Despite the fact AT&T’s contract forbids such users from joining in a class-action suit, a person from California sued the company in small claims court last week and received a judgment worth $850.

Apple Sends Out iPad 3 Event Invitations

The long and struggling silence from Apple has finally come to an end- the company sent out the invitations yesterday, welcoming bloggers to the event in San Francisco that will definitely be the place where the iPad 3 will be unveiled in about a week. The “previously-reliable” sources appear to staying dependable again, as the previously rumored date: March 7 – looks like to be true! You see the official invitation on the pic in the left corner, saying: “We have something you really have to see. And touch.”

And there is an “unidentified” device partly demonstrated, but an expert eye will definitely encrypt that it is an iPad! If you’re attentive enough, you've probably mentioned that there is no home button, at least not where it should be. Some say that the device on the pic is rotated the way that the part shown is the side, not the bottom, based on the water drops on the device screen. The water drops unveils one more secret as well: the next gen iPad will be completely waterproof, as it seems. Anyway, as for the home button, if there is one, what should we touch then? I mean something that is disclosed, and we have never touched it before. Anyway, there is a great possibility that the almost trademarked home button will not be present on iPad 3, and there is no word on what will be placed instead.

One more thing – ( © Steve Jobs )– is the extremely high quality display demonstrated on the device at the pic. To be fair, iPad 2 display lays far behind from what is shown here… So it is reasonable to expect iPad 3 to feature 2048 x 1536 resolution display!

Now look at the icons on the screen – all we can clear our is the maps and calendar. The later shows the event date – March 7, Wednesday (Apple’s lovely magic day) as expected. As for the maps, it’s very likely that Apple will introduce own maps instead of the Google maps it has used till now.

However, all we have to do is to keep calm and wait a bit ( one week is such a little time compared to how much we’ve been waiting for iPad 3 so far) and see what Apple has to show off on March 7 in San Francisco. Stay tuned to be the first to learn about iPad 3!

Mercedes and SIRI… What connection may occur among them?

Here is very particular news in Apple daily life. Mercedes Benz has announced that its new A-Class range of cars will have a new system centered on the iPhone 4S and SIRI. Sounds amazing… This is the first time when a car manufacturer has incorporated SIRI into its vehicle entertainment system.

The new system will be announced and demonstrated next month, at the Geneva Motor Show. It will be launched initially in Europe with the new Mercedes Benz A-class vehicle but it will also roll out in the autumn of 2012 for the B, C and E-Class cars.

The ability to control functions using the car’s built in microphone and noise cancelling technology would be a big success for SIRI’s understanding in the car.

The Digital Drive Style application allows drivers to connect with Facebook and Twitter, read out status updates, control radio, etc. If not mention making appointments, sending text messages/emails and so on… The most amazing feature that users will use mostly is the ability to find your car in a crowded parking! Another feature includes getting real-time traffic data and point-of-interest searches through a new Garmin navigation system.

How do you feel about the news? Probably this is the best way to link the two most needed accessories...

iPad 3 Announced In March

So much awaited, discussed and rumored, iPad 3- the flagship Apple device – is said to be officially announced on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, storing unbelievable power! iPad 2 was groundbreaking, even the competitors admit, however, iPad 3 is going to be unbelievable – previously reliable sources claim. The next generation tablet by Apple is said to even improve its already awesome and extremely extraordinary predecessor.

Apple keeps on maintaining its original style, choosing Wednesday as a day of such announcements! The iPad  3 event is planned to be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple’s favorite location for big declarations like these.

Different sources hope for different specifications, but they all agree on the date and location mentioned above. The rumored features of iPad 3 include:

2048×1536 Retina display is what we’ll definitely will see, according to the same source mentioned above, claiming to be close to Apple.  iPad 3 is also rumored to feature a quad-core Apple A6 system-on-a-chip, which is contradicted to the idea of simply improving and optimizing the current dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor found in the Apple A5 SoC. Well, who knows…?

And the most mysterious: 4G LTE networking with a compatible Qualcomm chipset to become available, but with the international LTE coverage to be still slim, and in some cases a year or more away…

One more discussed feature of yet unveiled iPad 3 is the camera – expected to be either 5 or 8 megapixel back one, whole featuring a FaceTime HD camera in front. But this opinion gets in confict with the fact that if Apple wants (and probably it is so) to remain their $499 price tag, even if iPad 2 will stay in the game for $399, the company will have to keep component costs down low enough. And one more thing… the camera should be able to fit into the thin casing…

Well that’s all we’ve got and found reasonable enough to mention so far. If you do have any idea or can suggest different version of any assumption provided above, do not hesitate to have your say below in the comments!

Keep Playing…

Have you ever thought how addictive smartphone game applications influences on your brain?  Keep playing… it may be good for your brain.

A new study from the Archives of Neurology says that one who plays brain stimulating games might have improved memory and delay/prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Traditional brain games are scientifically designed to boost cognitive activity and enhance memory as well.

The market for mobile brain gaming applications is booming. For example, Lumosity, which is one of the top creators of brain-training exercises and applications for web and mobile, raised $32.5 million for its brain training applications in 2011.

Scientists found that many games requires focus – including Angry birds, which is the most popular application – give the brain a healthy workout. According to scientists, playing games, reading and writing might cause the memory loss disease.

Maybe you even hear about Kathleen Connell of the UK, who is one hundred-year-old and is the perfect example who spends a couple hours per day playing brain games to keep her mind young. Connell’s favorite applications are Art Academy, Brain Trainer, Scrabble and Family Fortunes… Brain Trainer calculated her mental age at 64! As he says “If there’s any secret to a long life it’s to think positive and keep your mind active.”

If the study and Connell’s advice are true you should be happy – because it seems that your favorite activity is useful for your healthy! That is the happiness.

Apple’s New Strategy for Selling Its Handsets in Hong Kong

As we all know, after an incident at the Apple store in Beijing, selling of iPhone4S has stopped in China. But the company has turned to a new, safer tactic to sell its most wanted device. The new system do not allows reserving an iPhone without inputting full credentials, including government photo ID matching the name and ID number. This is meant for keeping out scalpers who use bots to snag up phones in the reservation system.

If you want to buy an Apple Phone in Hong Kong, you need to enter your information on newly set up page on the Hong Kong Apple online store site and enter a lottery. You have only three hours to put in for a phone, between 9am - 12pm. If you are a lucky one, Apple will email you by 9pm that evening, letting you know instructions on pick up your handset the following day. When a “winner” goes to the store, one needs to show the marching ID.

Sure, it is a very strict system not to be allowed to walk in and buy the phone, but violence from people who attacked the store in the releasing day of iPhone4S, was stricter.

The new reservation system is only for shoppers in Hong Kong, it is unknown yet whether Apple rolls this out across the country.

Apple In Education – Introducing Textbooks And iTunes U

At Apple's "Education Event" at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, the company unveiled reinvented textbooks, calling them a "new textbook experience." The freshly introduced books are graphical, interactive, and take advantage of features such as 3D imaging, embedded video, and multi-touch gestures. The books will be available for the iPad users to download directly from the iBooks Store.

If you’re wondering how the publishers will manage to make those new iBook2 textbooks, here’s an answer for you: there will be a new Mac app rolling out, as Apple announced. The new assisting app will significantly facilitate to design and format these new interactive textbooks, allowing users to embed HTML, 3D objects, interactive image galleries, Q&A, and so on, and allow the creators to publish their work to Apple's iBookstore directly from the app! Moreover, the authors will be allowed to update the published books, in case there are some typos and other petty errors captured.

iBooks Author, allowing you to create dynamic, current, engrossing, and truly interactive e-books, is available for free in the Mac App Store for everyone who desires to become an early adopter!

Few of the iPad-based education program partners were also announced, including Pearson, McGraw Hill, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt —together making 90% of the textbooks currently available in the US! The companies mentioned will be filling the new "Textbooks" category in iBooks 2 with high-school level textbooks, and are piloting the new iBook Author app as well. Covering every subject level of study for high-school students, the textbooks will be available for $14.99 or less at launch – while the publishers will be able to set their own prices, but only in return for selling them exclusively through iBooks, so $14.99 appears to be the standard option by now.

The event was noteworthy for one more thing – iTunes U offering by Apple, for syncing your iBooks textbooks to your iPad. While Apple's Eddy Cue unveiled the new iTunes U app, designed to look a lot like iBooks 2, strictly a portal for accessing all types of educational materials, including a class syllabus, full course notes and videos, as well as iBooks notes.

Apple has teamed up with some of the world's top universities such as Duke, Harvard and many more, suggesting them to offer course materials for the part-time students as well, including lecture videos, quizzes and so on. Furthermore, though iTunes U used to only be accessible for the University students and lecturers, Apple has now made the app accessible to K-12 school districts, universities, and colleges in 26 countries!

However, there are two important things to note:

1. An iTunes Store account is required to access iTunes U course materials, so you should create an iTunes account first.

2. iBooks textbooks are readable only on iPad.

As a conclusion, it should be said that the era of heavy and dull textbooks is over! Although no iPad3 or iPhone5 was announced, the students now are still much luckier to have as strong and considerate supporter as Apple. Let us know your thoughts about iBooks Textbooks and iTunes U below in the comments!

As for now Apple has announced that in January-13 the phone will be making its way to China and other countries. The phone will be sold through the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. Pricing is not announced in local currencies, although it is listed as $199, $299 and $399, depends on flash memory unit - 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. Consider iPhone 3GS is free! But China is the key market among those countries because the  addressable market in China for potential smartphone users, which includes iOS and Android, is 122 million! Besides, China is the second largest market  for application store downloads. Other important things connecting to the issue is Apple’s payment policy  in China and the company’s store in Shanghai .

Apple’s Upcoming Media Event In NY

An important, but not a large-scale event is planned to be held in New York by the end of January by Apple, as “sources close to the situation” claim. Being well known for moving around their public show-and-tells, the tech giant is expected to focus on a media-related announcement. Not surprisingly, numerous rumors have aroused, all leading to different directions.

Some say it’s all about introducing iPad 3, the next iteration of the popular tablet device. Others claim that it’ll be iPhone 5 - the so much discussed next generation smartphone, anticipated since July 2011 . Recently aroused Apple TV   set and Apple Wearable Computer   is also considered as the reason of holding the media event, but the company is expected to launch a new Apple TV product later in 2012, and such an event would undoubtedly be held in the heart of the industry in Hollywood or at least in Silicon Valley.

On the other hand, several sources stressed that the event is not related to any of upcoming version of the iDevices, emphasizing the fact that Eddy Cue, Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services, will also be engaged. Being in charge of a large swath of Apple’s media units, including the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, as well as iAd and its iCloud services,  Eddy Cue last appeared at Apple’s New York event dedicated to the introduction of The Daily  - News Corp.’s online magazine.

To finally detect the truth, we contacted Apple media help, but not surprisingly, we’ve not got any reply yet. In case we get to know something, we’ll definitely keep you updated. By then, do not regret to share what you think the event will be dedicated to by sharing your opinions below in the comments.

Every day increasing numbers

The impact of the iPhone 4S on iPhone application downloads has been tracked by a marketing technology company, named Fiksu. The result is that download volume of the top 200 free applications increased 15% from previous record (which was 4.91 million daily downloads).

In November the firm’s department which measures this trend, peaked at 5.65 million downloads per day – and it was topped the 5 million mark! That is an increase of 83% over November – 2010. The analytics firm reports that the addressable market in the U.S. for potential smartphone users, which includes iOS and Android, is 91 million, as for China, it is 122 million.

Although these are remarkable numbers, there are still a lot of untapped application downloads out there. Furthermore we can assume that a whole bunch of new applications will be downloaded when new smartphone users come on board.

CEO of Fiksu Micah Adler says:  “app marketers have become savvier about planning and executing their ad spends during seasonal periods to avoid paying premium prices for acquiring users. In fact, November presented them with a somewhat unique opportunity to add more users at costs that were actually below October’s.”

Fiksu Indexes data was sourced from 7.6 billion (and more) mobile app actions, which include registrations, app launches and in-app purchases. Via the Fiksu for Mobile Apps 156 million downloads were recorded.

The Best-selling book of 2011

By the end of a year most companies sum up their performance in some areas, as Apple did . But now we will talk about other company and that is Amazon. In December it announced the list of their best-selling books of the year. What an honor to know that Steve Jobs ’s biography by Walter Isaacson has come out on top! Consider that the list takes into account first editions that were published in 2011 and includes only paid units. The ranking was culled from Amazon’s traditional book sales figures and Kindle eBook downloads as well.

Senior Editor of Books of Amazon Chris Schluep said: “After the year of recommending books to our customers, it’s always fun to see what books really resonated with them. We chose ‘Steve Jobs’ as one of the Top 10 best books of the year, and even though it was published in October, the sales have been phenomenal in both formats.”

It is truly surprising to see the book at the top of the list considering its relatively late (Oct.) publication but the impressive sales performance was conditioned with the huge show of fan support after Steve Jobs’s  death.

As for BARNES & NOBLE, the situation is a little bit different in its list of top 100 bestsellers of 2011. Through December 14, Steve Jobs’s biography by Walter Isaacson rounds out the top five. What about the book’s performance as an eBook in Nook’s line-up, is even less impressive; on the nookbook bestseller list it lands at #33.
