iPhone Comes to China Without Key Feature
Unicom's first iPhones lack WiFi, a possible handicap with sophisticated, demanding Chinese buyers. The technology, a key part of the iPhone's appeal, allows the phones in other markets to use free wireless networks in cafes and offices to download e-mail and the latest applications. Apple Inc. and Unicom also could face competition from an unusual source: unlocked iPhones brought in from abroad that have WiFi.
There are already an estimated 1.5 million to 2 million such phones using China Mobile 3G service that allows Internet access and other features. Unicom's prices range from 4,999 yuan ($730) to 6,999 yuan ($1,025) for the high-end, 32-gigabyte iPhone 3GS. That is 20 percent above the 5,700 yuan ($835) charged by merchants at Chinese street markets for a 3GS with WiFi.
The iPhone's awkward, delayed entry into China reflects the regulatory and technical hurdles of a fast-changing market where other global technology companies have struggled to establish themselves. Unicom's iPhones lack WiFi because it was temporarily banned by Beijing, which was promoting a rival Chinese system, according to BDA. The ban was relaxed in May after manufacturing had begun.

Unicom, China Mobile and the third company, China Telecom Ltd., all emerged with mobile and fixed-line services. The lack of WiFi means Unicom iPhone customers will have to pay to connect to the phone network for every function. BDA's Clark said that could alienate users if it leads to high monthly bills.

iPhone outruns BlackBerry in app use and social networks

iPhone owners are much more likely to download apps and get involved with social networking than their BlackBerry-owning counterparts, Compete revealed today in a new study.
Key findings include:
- 73 percent of Blackberry owners have downloaded 5 or fewer applications; in contrast, 72 percent of iPhone owners have downloaded 10 or more applications.
- Facebook is hot among iPhone owners: 71 percent of iPhone users report accessing Facebook from their mobile device, 37 percent listed Facebook as one of their top three most utilized apps and 18 percent claim it's their favorite app.
- 30 percent of all smartphone owners are either comfortable or very comfortable receiving targeted marketing on their device.
The researchers add that iPhone owners are more willing to buy their apps than BlackBerry owners.

In addition to networking activities, smartphone owners are open to receiving targeted marketing via their device. What types of offers make the best candidates for marketers trying to reach networked consumers? Impulse and leisure purchases tend to be easier to digest than big, highly considered ones. Therefore, nearly half of smartphone owners are receptive to location-based offers at restaurants and offers to save and pursue at their leisure, and 45% would use mobile grocery coupons.

iV Extended Battery & Charger for Apple iPhone

FastMac claims the iV paired to an iPhone provides up to 24 hours of talk time, 31 days of standby, more than 20 hours of video playback and 72 hours of audio playback time.
The iV connects to the iPhone’s dock connector and cradles the iPhone (separate versions are available for the iPhone and iPhone 3G). A full-sized USB port is built in, so it can power up a Bluetooth headset, digital camera or other device that recharges using USB power. The case is molded out of a soft-touch non-slip material. The bottom is contoured so the iPhone can still be docked and charged inside Apple’s own iPhone Dock and Universal dock; it incorporates speaker chambers that reflect the iPhone’s sound up and out towards the listener.
FastMac's iV is compatible with all models of the iPhone, including the iPhone 3G. Its dock connector port can also connect to and charge all models of the iPod nano & iPod touch. Thanks to its secondary charging port, the iV is also compatible with any electronic device that can be charged via a standard USB cable & matching power connector (such as a Bluetooth headset, digital camera, another iPod and even another phone). According to the USB-IF, a non-profit association of USB developers & manufacturers, more than 1000 devices can be powered using the iV’s secondary charging port

iPhone Sales Reposts Strong

This new estimate has Apple targeting 7.4 million iPhones before the holiday season even starts. While this is a drop down from the previous estimate that had Apple producing 800,000 iPhones a week, it is still rather impressive given its price and the economy in many parts of the world right now, especially the US.
So what does this really mean? Apple will need to sell 2.6 million iPhone 3Gs by the end of the year if they are to meet their original goal of 10 million phones sold.
